Military Memorabilia Framing in San Marcos

At A Frame of Art, we provide custom military memorabilia framing in San Marcos for veterans, families, collectors, and active service members. We design and build preservation-grade displays that protect service items long term while presenting them with balance, care, and respect.

Framing Military Service With Care and Respect

Military memorabilia carries weight. Some pieces mark a full career. Others hold the memory of a person or a moment that cannot be replaced. At A Frame of Art, we approach military framing with that understanding from the first conversation.

We do not use template shadow boxes or quick mounting methods. Each project starts with a design discussion and ends with a custom-built frame using archival materials and reversible techniques. Our goal is to protect the item, not lock it into something that cannot be safely changed later.

Many clients come in unsure of what they want the final piece to look like. That is normal. Our role is to guide the design, help balance the layout, and recommend options that respect both the service behind the item and how it will live in your space.

Types of Military Memorabilia We Frame

We frame a wide range of military items, from single keepsakes to complex displays with many elements. Below are common categories we work with, though this list is not limited.

Flags and Military Documents

Flags and documents are often the foundation of military framing projects. These pieces are usually fragile and require careful handling.

Common items include:

  • Folded burial flags

  • Retirement certificates signed under presidential authority

  • Discharge papers, including multi-page documents

  • Shellback and Crossing the Line certificates

We focus on proper folding, alignment, and removable mounting so documents remain protected and readable.

Uniforms and Fabric Items

Fabric items need support to hold their shape without stress. Poor mounting can cause sagging or distortion years later.

We commonly frame:

  • Dress jackets

  • Full uniforms

  • Military caps and hats

  • Patch collections, including large multi-patch layouts

Mounting is done with hidden stitching, internal support templates, and methods that remain archival and removable.

Medals, Pins, and Insignia

Medals and insignia often represent years of service and specific achievements. Their weight, metal type, and age affect how they should be mounted.

We regularly frame:

  • Full medal sets belonging to one service member

  • Collector groupings organized by era, branch, or manufacturer

  • Airman badges, wings, bars, and pins

  • Older medals made from silver, brass, copper, or mixed metals

Each medal or pin is mounted individually to maintain alignment and reduce strain over time.

Weapons and Specialized Items

Some military items are oversized or unusually shaped and require custom depth and structure.

These projects often include:

  • Ceremonial swords, sabers, and daggers

  • Navigation instruments such as ship sextants

  • Gear that benefits from deeper frames or display cases

Frames are built to exact depth, and acrylic display options are available when sides or underside viewing matters.

Personal and Memorial Items

Personal items often carry the strongest emotional meaning and are usually combined with other pieces.

We often work with:

  • Group photographs of service members

  • Maps used during deployment or field work

  • Rings, military Id tags aka dog tags and Zippos

  • Memorial rubbings taken from gravestones or monuments, paired with photographs

These items are carefully integrated into the design to create a balanced and meaningful display.

Our Military Framing Process

Every military framing project follows a clear, thoughtful process designed to protect the items and guide the design without rushing decisions.

  1. Consultation and review: We sit down with you to look through your items, talk through their history, and understand what you want the final piece to represent.

  2. Design and layout planning: We explore frame styles, matting, depth, and layout options, making adjustments to balance the display and fit your space.

  3. Archival mounting decisions: Based on the materials involved, we choose preservation methods that keep everything secure and fully removable.

  4. Custom frame building: Your frame is built to exact depth and size in-house, with careful attention to weight, spacing, and long-term stability.

  5. Final inspection and pickup or delivery: Once complete, we review the piece, wrap it properly, and arrange pickup or delivery and installation if needed.

Archival Framing and Preservation Standards

Military items are often one of a kind. Our framing methods focus on protecting original materials while keeping every component removable, stable, and safe for the long term.

Paper and Document Mounting

Official documents and historical papers are mounted using conservation techniques designed to protect fibers and inks.

We use Filmoplast tape for many paper items. This conservation-grade tape is designed to release with minimal moisture, helping prevent tearing or staining while keeping documents secure without permanent bonding.

For more fragile pieces, we use mulberry paper hinging. This method uses soft, brush-applied fibers that release under stress rather than pulling on the original paper, allowing safe removal if the piece is ever reframed.

All paper mounting is fully reversible. Permanent adhesives, pressure mounts, and shortcut methods are avoided.

Fabric and Uniform Mounting

Uniforms and fabric items need support without tension. Improper mounting can lead to sagging, stretching, or permanent creasing over time.

We use hidden stitching and pinning placed from behind seams to keep all support invisible and avoid damaging visible fabric. For heavier garments, internal support templates are built to the shape of the item so it holds form naturally without stress.

When additional strength is needed, fishing line may be used in discreet locking patterns. This provides stability while remaining removable and low profile.

Medals and Pins

Medals and insignia are mounted individually to maintain alignment and reduce long-term strain.

When requested, medals are hand-sewn for added stability. Permanent adhesives are avoided because they can leave residue, damage surfaces, or fail over time.

Special care is taken with older metals such as silver, brass, and mixed alloys. Original pin backs are never removed in order to preserve the integrity and collectibility of each piece. When necessary, we carefully cut discreet slits in the mat or hand-sew the item into place to ensure secure, balanced support. Small acrylic spacers may also be used selectively to keep items level and evenly supported, all while maintaining a fully archival presentation.

Custom Display and Frame Options

Military items come in many sizes and shapes. We build frames around the items themselves, allowing the design and structure to support both appearance and long-term stability.

Flag displays:

We offer traditional triangular cases for folded flags, as well as custom layouts that pair flags with medals, photographs, certificates, or insignia using deeper frames and balanced spacing.

Deep frames and shadow boxes:

Built to exact depth, these frames accommodate uniforms, medals, weapons, and layered designs while supporting weight properly and maintaining long-term stability.

Acrylic and display cases:

Custom poly mirror acrylic boxes allow side and underside viewing for deep or irregular items, with options for removable access or secured displays and base-mounted support.

Thoughtful Design and Layout Planning

Military framing is not just about mounting items. It is about how the story reads when everything is viewed together.

We encourage clients to bring everything they may want included, even items they are unsure about. Single objects often feel visually incomplete on their own, and thoughtful layouts usually come together once all options are on the table.

If a design feels sparse, we may suggest adding photographs, printing digital images in-house, floating documents, or including pins, buttons, or engraved plaques. The goal is always balance, clarity, and respect for the service behind the items.

FAQs

How much does military memorabilia framing typically cost?

Pricing depends on the number of items, the depth required, and the amount of labor involved. Smaller projects may cost less, while multi-item medal or uniform displays often start around several hundred dollars and increase based on complexity and materials choosen. We provide clear estimates after reviewing your items in person.

How long does custom military framing usually take?

Most projects take a few weeks from consultation to completion. Timelines vary based on design complexity, materials, and current workload. We will give you a realistic timeframe once the design is finalized.

Do you offer rush military framing for time-sensitive projects?

Yes, rush framing is available for select projects when timing matters. Availability depends on the materials and techniques required. It is best to call ahead so we can confirm what is possible.

Is there a military discount for framing services?

We offer a 10% military discount upon request. This applies to active service members, veterans, and qualifying family projects. Just mention it during your consultation.

Can multiple military items be framed together in one display?

Yes. Many projects combine flags, medals, documents, photos, and personal items into a single custom display. During the design process, we help arrange everything so the layout feels balanced and tells the full story.
